RSS Ad Network

I've been a skeptic about whether the world is ready for ads in RSS feeds. Ready or not, here comes RSS Ads, a new service hoping to function as an intermediary between advertisers and publishers serving RSS feeds, similar to the role BeFree plays for web site banner and text ads.

To use the service, publishers will need to set up a "premium" RSS feed offering the full text of articles in newsreaders, rather than summaries, and then display the ad in the article text. If I'm reading the FAQ correctly, ads will only go to feed recipients who choose to subscribe to the premium full-text feed rather than the summary feed.

This is a slightly different approach than the one taken by InfoWorld, which included a text ad in its feed summaries. It's an effort that bears watching, and will be of particular interest to news sites looking for additional ad revenue streams.
